Faith, Prophecy, and the Science of God's Word

By Cecil Whitaker
The “Statistics” category of this journal will explore one of the most fascinating intersections between faith and reason: the mathematical probability of biblical prophecy. This series is inspired by Science Speaks by Peter W. Stoner, a book that applies statistical analysis to Old Testament prophecies concerning the Messiah. As a data scientist, I find this approach both intellectually compelling and spiritually enriching, and I hope to bring fresh insight to Stoner’s work by re‑examining his calculations with modern tools and methods. Prophecy is one of the strongest pieces of evidence of the divine inspiration of Scripture. God Himself declares that prophecy is a signature of His sovereignty: “Declaring the end from the beginning… My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure.” Isaiah 46:9–10 (KJV) Unlike human predictions, biblical prophecy is precise, detailed, and fulfilled across centuries. The prophets wrote under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, not by human intuition or guesswork: “Holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.” 2 Peter 1:21 (KJV) In this series, I will examine several key prophecies about Jesus Christ and calculate the statistical likelihood of any one person fulfilling them by chance. Stoner’s original work demonstrated that even a small number of prophecies — eight, sixteen, or forty-eight — produce probabilities so astronomically small that coincidence becomes mathematically impossible. My goal is not merely to repeat Stoner’s findings, but to test them, update them, and expand them. I will: Recalculate Stoner’s original probabilities using modern statistical tools Examine additional prophecies not included in his work Evaluate assumptions and refine probability models Present results in clear, understandable terms for readers of all backgrounds This series is not about proving God through mathematics — faith does not rest on numbers. Rather, it is about showing how mathematics supports what Scripture has already declared: that Jesus Christ is the promised Messiah, and that the Word of God stands firm against every test. Jesus Himself said: “I tell you before it come, that, when it is come to pass, ye may believe…” John 13:19 (KJV) Prophecy strengthens faith. Probability highlights its impossibility apart from God. Together, they reveal the beauty of a faith that is both spiritual and intellectually robust. I invite you to join me as we explore these prophecies, test the numbers, and marvel at the God who wrote history before it happened.
