Angels
Angels: Messengers, Protectors, and Warriors
By Cecil Whitaker

Angels are among the most fascinating and misunderstood beings in all of Scripture. They appear throughout the Bible as messengers, protectors, warriors, worshipers, and tragically as rebels who became the Devil and his demons. Yet despite their frequent presence in God’s Word, many believers today are unsure how angels operate, whether they interact with people in the modern world, and how to discern truth from speculation.
This new Angels category in My Faith Journal will explore what the Bible actually teaches about these spiritual beings, how they have interacted with people throughout history, and how they continue to influence the world today. Because this topic often invites debate, confusion, skepticism and even fear, each article will be grounded in Scripture, supported by trusted Christian resources, and strengthened by personal testimonies from fellow believers.
“Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?” Hebrews 1:14 (KJV)
What the Bible Says About Angels
The Bible describes angels with remarkable clarity. They are created beings, distinct from humans, who serve God’s purposes. They appear in moments of revelation, protection, judgment, and worship. Throughout this series, we will examine:
What are Angels?
Angels are created spiritual beings, not humans who have died, not omniscient, not omnipresent. "For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth visible and invisible..." Colossians 1:16 (KJV). Angels are not humans who have died, the bible describes people being like angels but not as being angels themselves in heaven, "For when they shall rise from the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage; but are as the angels which are in heaven." Mark 12:36 (KJV). While angels exceed human knowledge, "...my lord is wise, according to the wisdom of an angel of God, to know all things that are in the earth" 2 Samuel 14:20 (KJV), they are not omniscient, "But of that day and that hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels which are in heaven." Mark 13:32 (KJV). Angels can travel from heaven to earth and back but are not omnipresent with biblical references to being sent, "...the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth" Luke 1:26 (KJV).
What angels do:
Angels serve multiple purposes in scriptures, but the main theme is that they serve God. They deliver messages, protect God’s people, execute judgment, worship God, and minister to believers.
How angels appear in Scripture
(Sometimes in human form, sometimes in glory, sometimes unseen.)
Key biblical references include:
Genesis 18–19 — Angels visit Abraham and Lot
Daniel 6, 9–10 — Angels protect and deliver messages
Matthew 1–2 — Angels guide Joseph
Luke 1–2 — Angels announce Christ’s birth
Acts 12 — An angel frees Peter from prison
Revelation 5–12 — Angels in worship and warfare
These passages and more will form the foundation of this series.
Angels and Human Interaction—Then and Now
One of the most compelling questions believers ask is whether angels still interact with people today. Scripture gives us reason to believe they do:
“Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares.” — Hebrews 13:2 (KJV)
Throughout this series, we will explore:
Biblical accounts of angelic intervention
Historical testimonies from Christian leaders
Modern experiences from believers
Discernment principles for evaluating spiritual encounters
Personal experiences and stories from fellow Christians will hopefully add depth, authenticity, and encouragement to bridge the gap between biblical accounts and present‑day faith.
The Devil and Demons: Fallen Angels
No study of angels is complete without addressing the reality of fallen angels. The Bible teaches that Satan and his demons were once holy angels who rebelled against God.
Key references include:
Isaiah 14 — The fall of Lucifer
Ezekiel 28 — The pride and corruption of the anointed cherub
Revelation 12 — A third of the angels cast down
Matthew 4 — Satan’s temptation of Christ
Mark 5 — Demonic possession and Christ’s authority
This portion of the series will be handled carefully and biblically, avoiding sensationalism while acknowledging the spiritual warfare believers face today.
Trusted Resources for Deeper Study
To support this series, you plan to reference two excellent Christian works:
“Angels: God’s Secret Agents” by Billy Graham
A classic, balanced, Scripture‑centered exploration of angelic ministry.
“Angels and Demons: A Companion to The Three Heavens” by Dr. John Hagee
A modern, accessible overview of angels, demons, and spiritual warfare.
These resources explore the topic beyond the articles and provide theological grounding for discussions.
A Closing Thought
Angels are not the focus of our faith, Christ is. But God has chosen to use angels throughout His Word to accomplish His purposes. By studying them carefully and biblically, we gain a deeper appreciation for God’s protection, His sovereignty, and the spiritual reality that surrounds us.
My prayer is that this series strengthens your understanding, encourages your faith, and helps you discern truth in a topic often clouded by confusion.
